City Technologies Dotcom was established by Michael Alldritt in 1990 in Sydney. Originally offering telecommunications services, the company quickly expanded into electrical and data network solutions.

In the early days, network installations commonly used 10Base2 coaxial cabling to connect PCs and printers. At that time, UTP data networks were still in their infancy, operating at speeds of around 10 MB/s. As technology has advanced and equipment costs have decreased, it is now common to see gigabit structured cabling networks.

Before the widespread availability of internet service providers, bulletin board systems (BBS) were very popular. Users connected via dial-up modems, achieving speeds of up to 56 kbps. This technology was later superseded by ADSL and, in some cases, ISDN. Today, VDSL modems used in NBN fibre-to-the-node (FTTN) connections can provide speeds of up to 100 MB/s. Where fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) is available, speeds of 155 MB/s or higher can be achieved.
